Tool Chest

Dish towels, duffle bags and rag wool socks were never dignified enough to house my growing collection of hand tools, and when I read a Fine Woodworking article on the North Bennet St School I knew I had found a new project. My version features a walnut case and drawer fronts, maple frames and drawer sides. I went with a three-part finish: First, a sealer coat on just the walnut; second, a slurry of pumice stone and boiled linseed oil to fill the open pores of the walnut; and third, six coats of Arm-R-Seal satin topcoat. Eventual phase II of this project will be to build the raised-panel front cover, which will slide into the top cavity when not in use.
